What Can (and Can't) Go in a Dumpster in Maryland

Most of what fills a dumpster is straightforward — furniture, boxes, drywall, wood, flooring, roofing shingles, general household junk. But Maryland, like every state, restricts a short list of materials from ordinary landfill disposal, and knowing that list before delivery day saves everyone a headache.
What's fine in a standard mixed load
- Furniture, mattresses and household junk

- Non-hazardous construction and demolition debris
- Small appliances with the refrigerant already removed

- Paint, solvents and oils (liquid form)
- Tires
- Batteries
- Hazardous chemicals
- Propane tanks and gas cylinders
- Medical waste
- Asbestos-containing material
- Refrigerant-containing appliances (until professionally recovered)
- Electronics restricted under state e-waste rules
Where the banned items actually go instead
Washington County Division of Solid Waste operates convenience centers and a recycling program that handles most of the items above — household hazardous waste, tires, batteries and electronics all have a proper drop-off path that isn't a landfill dumpster. Latex (water-based) paint is the one exception on the paint front: once it's fully dried out solid, it can go in with regular debris; wet paint of any kind needs the household hazardous waste route instead.
A note on appliances
Small appliances without refrigerant — microwaves, toasters, small electronics — are fine in the dumpster. Anything that once held refrigerant (refrigerators, freezers, window air conditioners) needs that refrigerant professionally recovered before it can be landfilled at all, dumpster or not. Why this matters for your rental
If a prohibited item ends up in your container, it has to be sorted out before the load can be disposed of properly, and that comes with a handling cost we disclose up front rather than bury in fine print. It's a rare occurrence, but an easy one to avoid — a two-minute conversation on the phone when you book usually settles any question about a specific item.
